Why Do I Keep Running Out of Hot Water?

Does it seem your hot water doesn’t last as long as it used to? Are you and your housemates fighting over who gets the first shower, because it’s the only one guaranteed hot water? This complaint is more common than you might think. There are a number of reasons why your water heater may not be so hot these days, and they can vary depending on what type of system you have. If your hot water keeps running out, Gold Star’s expert plumbing contractors in Newark will get your system up and running again.

Lack of Hot Water Causes by Types of Water Heaters

Electric hot water heater – Electric heaters contain two heating elements: upper and lower. If you have a limited supply of hot water, it is likely caused by a damaged lower heating element. (The upper element charges first, which means you would no hot water at all if it goes bad.) Another culprit may be a bad lower thermostat. This is a much easier repair since it is not necessary for your Newark plumber to drain the tank.

Indirect hot water heater – This is a storage tank with a heating coil inside and is used in conjunction with hydronic heating (baseboard heat). Hot water from the hydronic boiler circulates through the coil in the storage tank, heating all the water in the tank. An indirect system is able to provide a high volume of hot water, so if you are running short it may be that the thermostat is set too low or is broken. It may also be the result of a bad circulator or circulator relay, or the unit could be air-bound and in need of purging.

Tankless coil inside of gas or oil-fired boiler – This system heats water directly without the use of a storage tank. A heating coil or heat exchanger is installed in a main furnace or boiler. When hot water is requested, cold water enters the unit and is heated by a gas burner or electric element, resulting in a constant supply of hot water on demand. Since they rely on the furnace or boiler to heat the water, they operate most efficiently during the colder months when the heating system is operating regularly. Problems with hot water supply here could stem from the boiler itself or the coil could be blocked or damaged. Our Newark plumbing professionals can sort out the source of the problem and make the necessary repairs.
