Sweating it out in summer can be downright miserable for many of us. But when your AC system also starts to perspire, it’s a sign of worse to come. An HVAC water leak is often a symptom of a more severe issue under the surface, such as a frozen coil, overflowing drain pan, or clogged drain line. In this article, the pros at Gold Star Services discuss how to fix a leaking air conditioner and prevent more issues down the line.

How to Fix a Leaking Air Conditioner

In order to fix the leak, you need to determine the cause of the leak. Here are a few common reasons for why an air conditioner might be leaking water, and how to fix them.

  1. Frozen evaporator coils. If airflow is restricted, for example because the filter is dirty, the evaporator coils can freeze and drip water from the ice. In this example, a simple fix is to change the dirty filters. However, evaporator coils can freeze from a number of other causes, such as blocked vents, a broken blower motor, or lack of refrigerant. If changing the filter doesn’t do the trick, you will need to ask an HVAC technician to diagnose the problem.
  2. Drain pan problems. The permanent drain pan under the indoor air handler catches condensation. There is usually a second, removable drain pan underneath the AC unit. Turn off the AC and inspect the drain pan and pipe for leaks and cracks with a flashlight. If you find a crack, you’ll need to call a professional to find a replacement, at least for the permanent drain pan.
  3. Clogged condensate drain line. The condensate line can be blocked with debris and fungi, and needs to be cleaned once in a while. If you don’t have a wet-dry vacuum, you’ll need a professional technician to do this job.
