Time spent at home is all fun and games until someone has to Google “my air conditioner stopped working.” Luckily, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take on your own before calling the professionals. In today’s post, the experts at Gold Star Services share 5 things to check when your A/C stops working.
Our air conditioners help turn our homes into comfortable sanctuaries from the outside word. A busted A/C unit can be a major inconvenience, but sometimes the problems are easy to fix. Let’s look at 5 common A/C problems:
If your unit won’t turn on, the first thing to check is the thermostat. Ensure the unit is set to “ON” and that it displays the desired temperature. If it’s difficult to tell whether it reflects the temperature in your home, try making an extreme temperature change, such as lowering it by 10 degrees to see if this kicks the unit on. Be sure to check/replace the batteries in your thermostat—sometimes it’s as simple as that!
If your unit runs but doesn’t cool efficiently, check for dirty/clogged air filters. These should be replaced (or cleaned if reusable) every 90 days or so, depending on your location and the number of pets in the home.
If your unit won’t run at all, be sure to check for a tripped breaker.
If your unit turns on but won’t blow cool air out, it might be due to a fan that isn’t running. A tripped breaker, faulty thermostat or bad blower belt can all cause a fan to stop working.
When air can’t flow freely inside of your unit, the evaporator coil can freeze over. Dirty air filters and low refrigerant levels can both cause this issue. To fix it, turn off your unit and allow the ice to melt. Check air filters and replace them if necessary. If the issue persists, have an HVAC professional take a look, as it could indicate a refrigerant leak in your system.
