5 HVAC Troubleshooting Tips

hvac not working at all

Our HVAC units help keep our living spaces comfortable year-round. As a result, when you’re dealing with your HVAC not working at all, it can be a major inconvenience to those inhabiting the space. In this post, the experts at Gold Star Services provide 5 troubleshooting tips for an HVAC unit that’s not working.

  1. Check the Thermostat

The thermostat is responsible for kicking your system on in the first place. It may seem like a simple place to start but check to ensure the thermostat is on and set to the right function and temperature. You’ll also want to ensure it’s been installed in an area that isn’t subject to extreme temperature shifts, such as in direct sunlight or too close to an air vent. If you set your thermostat to the lowest (or highest) possible temperature and the unit still doesn’t turn on, have an HVAC technician take a look.

  1. Your Unit Won’t Turn On

If you turn your system on and nothing happens at all, it could indicate a blown fuse or a tripped breaker—check for either. If these seem in order, you could be dealing with loose wires, a faulty thermostat, compressor issues or a broken outdoor fan. If the problem isn’t obvious, it might be time to call a professional.

  1. Low Refrigerant

If a unit turns on but doesn’t heat or cool efficiently, it could indicate low refrigerant levels. This could occur due to refrigerant leaks, or your unit may have been undercharged with refrigerant to begin with. A qualified technician can top up refrigerant levels and inspect your system for any leaks.

  1. Frozen Evaporator Coils

When airflow is impeded within your unit, the evaporator coils that house refrigerant can form a layer of ice. The frozen coils will no longer be able to absorb heat, and your unit will no longer run efficiently. Impeded airflow can occur due to dirty air filters, obstructions in ductwork or low refrigerant levels.

  1. Air Filters

Cleaning/replacing dirty air filters is always a good place to start troubleshooting an underperforming unit and should be done on a regular basis.
