The Pros and Cons of Dual Fuel Furnaces

A traditional gas furnace uses fossil fuels – such as gas or oil – to heat your home. It’s a powerful system that most home and business owners are grateful to have when temperatures dip below freezing. But during most parts of the year, when climes are moderate, this unit can be inefficient and costly to operate.

Heat pumps transport warm air between indoors and out. When it’s cold, this device extracts warm air from outside, pumping it indoors. During summer, this process is reversed. Heat pumps use relatively little energy when compared to most other heating systems.

A dual fuel furnace is made up of both gas furnace and heat pump components. When the weather is mild, a dual fuel furnace will turn on the heat pump to ward off the cold, but if temperatures drop drastically – think near freezing – the system will switch off the heat pump and activate the brawn of the gas furnace components.

Because of the hybrid nature of this heating/cooling solution, there are no real negatives to investing in an efficient dual fuel furnace system. However, these devices are more expensive to purchase, install, and maintain than most traditional HVAC units.
