Why is My Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?

Air conditioners are complex systems with many moving parts, each one vital to the unit’s overall function. If one part fails, the whole system can malfunction. A common problem many residents notice is an air conditioner that has begun to blow hot air.

Gold Star has the expertise to get your Wilmington air conditioning cool again, no matter the cause. They know what can be causing your unit to blow hot, including:

  • A refrigerant leak – Refrigerant leaks are the cause of a host of air conditioning problems, proving that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Leaks can drain your system in a matter of hours or over the course of weeks. The best way to avoid complications from refrigerant leaks is to have your system regularly serviced by your Wilmington AC technician.
  • Frozen AC unit – As we discussed in last week’s blog, air conditioning units can actually freeze over. This is the most likely culprit if your air conditioner is blowing warm or hot air, which seems odd when there is ice inside the unit. The evaporator coil is the piece that freezes, blocking the cool air from blowing into your home. Instead you are feeling the warm air produced by the motor’s heat. Gold Star will diagnose why your unit is freezing and get it repaired quickly.
  • Blown breaker switch – Your air conditioning system is comprised of both an outdoor and an indoor unit. If the breaker for the outside unit fails, that unit won’t turn on. But if the inside unit is on a separate breaker, it will keep running. While the outside unit is responsible for cooling the air, the inside unit is responsible for circulating it. Therefore if the indoor unit still has power, you will have hot air blowing through your home. If your unit is tripping breakers, consult your local Wilmington AC technician to make sure it isn’t straining and overloading the circuit.
  • Wiring – With all the wires running through your unit, it is possible for one of them to become frayed or cut, often from animals chewing on them. This will cause malfunction or system failure. Never attempt to fix an electrical problem on your unit! Be sure to call a certified Wilmington AC technician to perform the repair.
